BBC continues Wrexham broadcasts

Wrexham’s Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths, has received a guarantee from BBC Wales that they will continue to broadcast radio commentary on Wrexham matches during the team’s first season in Blue Square Premier League, which commences in August.

Lesley wrote to seek assurances from the broadcaster, following an approach from Wrexham Supporters Trust (WST) in the days immediately after Wrexham were relegated from the Football League.

The AM has now received a letter from Nigel Walker, Head of Sport at BBC Wales.

In his letter, Mr. Walker told Lesley: “As things stand, Radio Wales will continue to provide commentary of Wrexham’s matches each week. Like the majority of our editorial policy, it will be subject to review depending on the team’s progress.”

Commenting after receiving her reply, Lesley Griffiths said: “This is superb news for Wrexham fans. BBC Wales are to be congratulated for continuing to provide radio commentaries during Wrexham’s first season in Blue Square Premier League.

“This is going to be a crucial and difficult year for the club, so it is vital they receive as much coverage as possible, to enable fans to follow their progress over the course of the season.

“The disappointment experienced by fans in the days immediately after Wrexham dropped out of the Football League, was not just confined to North Wales. There was heartfelt disappointment across the length and breadth of Wales at our misfortune.

“However, there is already a sense of optimism growing amongst fans about the coming season. I am confident that under Brian Little’s stewardship, Wrexham’s stay in the Conference will be shortlived and we will bounce straight back to League status. I am delighted that BBC Wales will there to witness it.”

Hack Horse Sanctuary Open Day

It was a bit wet yesterday but we still really enjoyed visiting Pony at Hack Horse Sanctuarythe Hack Horse Sanctuary for their Open Day. It was lovely to see all the animals looked after in such an idyllic setting.

I always admire people who give up their time, and show such dedication to charity work, and Pamela Bluck has done a grand job with this sanctuary. Visit their website at www.hackonline.org.uk for more information.

For anyone learning Welsh a great resource is the BBC website here. Hwyl fawr!

Wrexham - Kings of bling?

Wrexham is one of the top three ‘bling’ towns in the UK according to a new survey.

The poll for Halifax Home Insurance revealed that Britons keep £52 billion worth of jewellery in their homes - with the average house containing gems worth £1,986.

The survey found 34 million of us wear jewellery worth an estimated £8.6 billion every day and 11 per cent of Britons own more than £5,000 worth.

Northampton topped the league table of “bling” towns with the average person there wearing £469 of jewellery every day, closely followed by Glasgow locals, who adorn themselves with £468 worth, and Wrexham residents, who wear gems valued at £460.

England’s capital came 9th in the poll, with Londoners wearing £286 of jewellery.

Bottom of the table was Swansea, where the average person wears £282 worth.

The research also showed that in some areas people are more like magpies - collecting and storing high value jewellery inside their homes.

Top magpie town is Milton Keynes where, it is claimed, the average home contains £3,186 worth of gems. This is followed by Preston, where homeowners boast £3,001 worth, and Northampton with £2,919.

Are drivers of bin lorries a law unto themselves?

Got stuck behind a bin lorry outside Victoria Road School yesterday. The driver parked well out from the curb ensuring that he blocked the traffic in both directions. If he’d parked just a couple of feet closer to the curb we could have got past. This isn’t he first time this has happened either - drivers of these lorries seem to completely disregard other road users and couldn’t care less if parking just past a parked car would allow other drivers to pass. They also seem to expect all other road users to give way to them and there is never a raised hand to say thank you. Oh and they drive at speed IN REVERSE down my road despite the fact that children play there regularly. Are they human or robots? Or just plain ignorant? Is it just me that they annoy? Wrexham Menswear shop has links to 550 year old ship

Have made a note in my diary to research the Off the Cuff Menswear building in Wrexham. The building is beautiful inside and it’s beams date back 550 years. They are believed to be from a recycled ship. Look in the album on this ad for some pictures.
