BBC continues Wrexham broadcasts

Wrexham’s Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths, has received a guarantee from BBC Wales that they will continue to broadcast radio commentary on Wrexham matches during the team’s first season in Blue Square Premier League, which commences in August.

Lesley wrote to seek assurances from the broadcaster, following an approach from Wrexham Supporters Trust (WST) in the days immediately after Wrexham were relegated from the Football League.

The AM has now received a letter from Nigel Walker, Head of Sport at BBC Wales.

In his letter, Mr. Walker told Lesley: “As things stand, Radio Wales will continue to provide commentary of Wrexham’s matches each week. Like the majority of our editorial policy, it will be subject to review depending on the team’s progress.”

Commenting after receiving her reply, Lesley Griffiths said: “This is superb news for Wrexham fans. BBC Wales are to be congratulated for continuing to provide radio commentaries during Wrexham’s first season in Blue Square Premier League.

“This is going to be a crucial and difficult year for the club, so it is vital they receive as much coverage as possible, to enable fans to follow their progress over the course of the season.

“The disappointment experienced by fans in the days immediately after Wrexham dropped out of the Football League, was not just confined to North Wales. There was heartfelt disappointment across the length and breadth of Wales at our misfortune.

“However, there is already a sense of optimism growing amongst fans about the coming season. I am confident that under Brian Little’s stewardship, Wrexham’s stay in the Conference will be shortlived and we will bounce straight back to League status. I am delighted that BBC Wales will there to witness it.”
