It’s still the man’s job to propose according to 52% of respondents of a new poll
29/02/2008 by admin.
|
Today is February 29th - traditionally the day that women can take matters into their own hands and propose to a man. But is that what men want?
In a poll by the Wrexham Wedding Directory 52% of respondents said that they wouldn’t like a woman to propose to them, 40% said that they would be happy if a woman proposed, and 8% said they would never get married. Interestingly the older the respondent, the more likely they were to like the idea of being proposed to, with 75% of those in the 35-49 age group saying that they would be happy if a woman proposed, and 25% saying ‘no, it’s the man’s job’, and none saying they would never get married. The younger the respondent the more likely they were to say no, perhaps because they don’t feel ready, but disappointingly for any hopeful brides, 11% of the 18-24 age group said they would never get married.
Leap Year has long been the traditional time that women can propose marriage. While in these days of equal rights it is acceptable for a woman to propose marriage to a man whatever the year, that hasn’t always been the case. When the rules of courtship were stricter, women were only allowed to pop the question on one day every four years. That day was February 29th.
It is believed this tradition was started in 5th century Ireland when St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick about women having to wait for so long for a man to propose. According to legend, St. Patrick said the yearning females could propose on this one day in February during the leap year.
According to English law, February 29th was ignored and had no legal status. Because of this folks assumed that traditions would also have no status on that day. It was also reasoned that since the leap year day existed to fix a problem in the calendar, it could also be used to fix an old and unjust custom that only let men propose marriage.
The first known documentation of this practice dates back to 1288, when a law was passed in Scotland that allowed women to propose marriage to the man of their choice in that year. They also made it law that any man who declined a proposal in a leap year must pay a fine. The fine could range from a kiss to payment for a silk dress or a pair of gloves.
But for those ladies who pluck up the courage to propose and get a positive response, they will find lots of information on planning their big day at www.wrexhamweddingdirectory.co.uk. |

Couples prefer to wed a while
17/02/2008 by admin.
According to the latest research the average couple will be engaged for three years before getting married - almost twice as long as 30 years ago.
Modern day lovebirds delay tying the knot due to work commitments and the cost of a big wedding, a poll of 4,500 couples found. Joe Boll of JP Diamonds, which commissioned the study, said: "Getting married isn’t as significant for some as a romantic gesture like getting engaged."
How long will you have you been engaged before your wedding date? Please leave a comment!
